Symphony to celebrate Disney favorites at Sunday concert
March 12, 2013
It’s hard to imagine a Disney animated film classic without its soundtrack.
The Fox Valley Symphony this weekend offers an opportunity for patrons of all ages to relive their Disney favorites through a pops concert that features live orchestral music, video clips and stills from some of the best-loved Disney animated movies.
“There’s a perennial interest in Disney movies, and the music that goes along with them is such an integral part of the presentation,” said Brian Groner, the Fox Valley Symphony’s music director. “And it is such memorable music that this (concert) just seemed like such a great choice.”
The matinee concert of “The Magical Music of Disney” starts at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in downtown Appleton. Tickets cost $29-$59. Student tickets are available for $10 on the day of the concert.
The Building for Kids Children’s Museum is the Fox Valley Symphony’s Music for a Cause partner for this concert. Mention the Building for Kids when ordering concert tickets, and 75 percent of the ticket price will benefit the Building for Kids.
The funds will help support the Building for Kids’ daily operations, said Kristi Helmkamp, volunteer and programs manager at the Building for Kids.
“We have our exhibits to maintain,” she said. “We always have activities happening in our DaVinci Art & Science Studio. So being a recipient of these proceeds will help us to continue to meet our mission of the museum, which is to build the imagination, creativity and confidence of each child who walks through the door.”
On the concert’s program is music from movies including “Mary Poppins,” “Tarzan,” “Mulan,” “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hercules” and “The Little Mermaid.”
“These are not watered-down arrangements of the scores for these movies,” Groner said. “These are suites extracted from the full orchestral soundtrack. So there’s a lot of big and bold music where appropriate, and it’s the real thing.”
