Byron Stripling to hold Master Class

Trumpet player Byron Stripling, who is performing with the Fox Valley Symphony on Jan. 31, will hold a free Master Class on Friday, Jan. 30 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 163 at the Lawrence Conservatory of Music.
Stripling, who frequently performs as a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra, will share tips on how to have a successful career in music. Stripling believes that through practicing, listening and creative emulation musicians can be successful. With passion, love and a touch of humor, Stripling will lead participants through an exercise to establish a clear vision of who they want to be and what they need to do to get there.
Stripling earned his stripes as lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones and Frank Foster. He has also played and recorded extensively with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson and Buck Clayton in addition to The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and The GRP All-Star Big Band. In addition to his work as a concert soloist, Stripling serves as artistic director and conductor of the highly acclaimed Columbus Jazz Orchestra.
Stripling will join the Fox Valley Symphony for a jazzy tribute to Louis Armstrong at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. For more information about the concert, please visit www.foxvalleysymphony.com.

Upcoming FVS performances at the P.A.C. include the Kids’ Classics concert on March 24, Lawrence University assistant professor and violin virtuoso Wen-Lei Gu on April 4 and a semi-staged production of Bizet’s opera “Carmen” featuring the White Heron Chorale on May 16.
