The Youth Soloist Competition offers young Northeast Wisconsin musicians the opportunity to compete for cash awards and the chance to perform with the Fox Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra. The first place winner performs as part of the Partners in Education concert at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center with the FVS Youth Orchestra and will receive a cash prize to help further their musical education.

The Fox Valley Symphony Youth Soloist Competition will be held on January 12, 2013 at the Music Drama Center at Lawrence University, Appleton.

Eligibility
High School students in grades 10, 11, 12 who are residents of the NEW North (Appleton, Berlin, Chilton, Florence, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Keshena, Manitowoc, Marinette, Montello, Oconto, Oshkosh, Shawano, Sheboygan, Sturgeon Bay, Waupaca and Wautoma) performing on strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, harp or piano are eligible. A contestant can be declared first place winner of this competition only one time. The winner will perform with the Fox Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra, in the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Appleton on March 18, 2013. All FVS awards are open to students with disabilities, who are encouraged to apply.

Throughout all rounds of competition, the judges' decisions are final.

Applications must be postmarked by December 12, 2012.

Requirements
Instrumentalists must select a solo concerto movement or concert piece with orchestral accompaniment from standard published repertoire. Rental parts MUST be readily available. Candidates are strongly encouraged to select concerti from the standard repertoire as budget allocations for music rental are limited and are made at the discretion of the FVS Competition Committee.

Repertoire chosen for the competition must be suitable for performance with the Youth Orchestra. The winning work will be performed at the Partners in Education concert with approval from the Music Director, the ensemble directors involved and the committee.

Repertoire in the competition must be submitted to the Director of Youth & Education by the deadline to determine availability of score/parts and feasibility of performance. If you have any doubts about your chosen piece, contact your teacher or the Director of Youth & Education who will consult with the FVSO librarian.

Vocalists may perform more than two contrasting works, one in a foreign language, all works with orchestral accompaniment. If selected as a winner, two works will be performed.

The competition and performance music shall be the same (time limitations restrict performance time to 10 minutes). The committee reserves the right to approve repertoire.

All auditions will be with an accompanist provided by the contestant. No exceptions. Accompanists may perform in a maximum of five entries during the competition. All accompanists should be prepared to perform in the final round. Due to scheduling issues, accompanist changes will not be accepted after January 4, 2013.

The total performance time cannot exceed 10 minutes. A proctor will time the audition from the beginning of the performance.

Contestants must provide an original score for the judge with cuts marked. Any cadenza should be included in the performance. No photocopies are allowed.

Memorization is required.

Written comments from the judges will be mailed to all of the participants.

Non-refundable entry fee: $30 payable to Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra. Applications must be postmarked by December 12, 2012.
