2010 Fox Valley Symphony Youth Soloist Competition
The Youth Soloist Competition offers young Northeastern Wisconsin musicians the opportunity to compete for the chance to perform with the Fox Valley Symphony Youth Symphony in concert and to receive cash prizes to help further their musical education. The Fox Valley Symphony League established this competition in 1967.
The Fox Valley Symphony Youth Soloist Competition will be held on January 15, 2011, at the Lawrence Conservatory of Music in Appleton. The day consists of a series of four instrumental and vocal competitions and a winners' performance. The competition exists to inspire middle and high school musicians through educational and performance opportunities by providing:
- Judges' critiques of his/her performance
- A venue in which to meet and hear other young musicians
- Encouragement and recognition
- Prizes to help further their music education
Eligibility
High School students in grades 10, 11, 12 who are residents of Brown, Calumet, Door, Florence, Fond du Lac. Green Lake, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Marquette, Menominee, Oconto, Outagamie, Shawano, Sheboygan, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago counties performing on strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, harp or piano.
A contestant can be declared first place winner of this competition only one time. The winner will perform with the Fox Valley Symphony Youth Symphony, in the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Appleton on March 7, 2011.
Applications must be postmarked by December 1, 2010.
Requirements
- Instrumentalists must select a solo concerto movement or concert piece with orchestral accompaniment from standard published repertoire. Rental parts MUST be readily available.
- Vocalists may perform more than two contrasting works, one in a foreign language, all works with orchestral accompaniment. If selected as a winner, two works will be performed.
- The competition and performance music shall be the same.
- The committee reserves the right to approve the repertoire.
- Memorization is required.
- Contestant must provide an accompanist who should be prepared to play in the final round. Change of accompanist will be accepted until January 3, 2011, due to scheduling issues. Accompanists will be allowed to perform in a maximum of 5 entries.
- The total performance time cannot exceed 10 minutes. (Any performance over 10 minutes will be disqualified.) A proctor will time the audition from the beginning of the performance.
- Contestant must provide an original score for the judge with cuts marked. Any cadenza should be included in the performance. No photocopies are allowed.
- Non-refundable entry fee: $30 payable to Fox Valley Symphony.
