Partners In Education (PIE)
The Fox Valley Symphony is dedicated to bringing live symphonic music to our area youth. We bring the classroom portion of the PIE program free of charge to participating schools in the Fox Valley and beyond. The FVS works in partnership with the Trout Museum of Art (formerly the Appleton Art Center) to provide classroom teachers the tools needed to connect their academic subjects with the themes and ideas of our program.

We reach more than 1,200 third-grade students each year by visiting classrooms and presenting the PIE concepts in a fun and informative manner. The students then attend a concert in the spring at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. Our goal is to make music and art a part of the students' everyday lives.

2010-11 PIE Program
"A Musical Circus"

PIE is proud to present our 2010-11 program "A Musical Circus." This year's repertoire includes:
  • Dvorak's Carnival Overture
  • Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf
  • Fucik's Entrance of the Gladiators
  • Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever
  • Plus the Youth Soloist Competition winner!
Students will make connections between visual art and music by exploring common elements such as line, rhythm and color.

Lesson Plans (PDFs)
The 2010-11 PIE Program PDFs are password protected. Teachers, please contact Youth & Education Programs Manager Melissa Gurholt for your password. (These lesson plans will be ready at the beginning of October)

PIE Timeline
  • Fall (November). Symphony musicians travel to participating schools and instruct students about the concert repertoire with a fun, interactive presentation that weaves music into the everyday classroom environment.

  • Winter (February). Symphony string quartet musicians will visit classrooms in winter to demonstrate musical concepts the students have learned. The quartet will play some of the musical excerpts from the concert and will include interactive activities.

  • November/December/January. Trout Museum of Art instructors will also visit the students and present an exciting and visual art component that ties in with the music and concert theme.

2010-11 PIE Art Project
This year's PIE art project will focus on the creation of a clown from the circus. Students will explore the concepts of color and rhythm while creating their very own work of art. These one-of-a-kind works of art will be displayed floating above the stage at the musical performance in March! This 45 minute presentation is led by a staff member of the Trout Museum of Art.

Concert. The program culminates in March with a concert on Monday, March 7, 2011, at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. This year, students will hear other talented students from the Fox Valley Youth Symphony perform the concert under the direction of Gary Wolfman. They will see their artwork displayed, hear the music studied in a live performance and actually have the opportunity to sing with the orchestra as they sing the chorus from Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. Students also have the opportunity to hear a performance by the Fox Valley Symphony Youth Soloist Competition winner at the concert.

How Can I Get a Piece of PIE?
Registration forms have been mailed to 3rd grade classroom teachers, elementary general music teachers and principals of previously participating schools. If you did not receive a brochure, please contact the office. Participation is limited to the first 60 classrooms to respond. The classroom portion of the program is free of charge, but there is a nominal per student fee of $6 for the concert. Please contact Melissa Gurholt, Youth & Education Programs Manager at 968-0300, ext. 24, or mgurholt@foxvalleysymphony.com.

History Of Partners In Education (PIE)
The FVS Partners in Education (PIE) program began in 1991 thanks to a generous contribution by former Symphony League member Bettyjo Heckrodt. It has continued through grants and contributions from individuals and corporate "Adopt-a-Classroom" sponsorships throughout the Fox Valley. "Adopt-a-Classroom" is a partnership in which local businesses "adopt" specific schools in their area who participate in PIE. The FVS is extremely grateful to the Adopt-a-Classroom season sponsors. They are what make the classroom component of this program completely free of charge to participating schools.
