Partners in Education
The Fox Valley Symphony is dedicated to bringing live symphonic music to our area youth. Each year, we reach over 1,500 third grade students by visiting classrooms and bringing students to a concert in the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. Our goal is to make music and art a part of the students' everyday lives.

The FVS Partners in Education program began in 1991, thanks to a very generous contribution by Symphony League member Bettyjo Heckrodt, and it continued through grants and contributions from individuals and corporations throughout the Fox Valley.

Adopt-a-Classroom is a partnership in which local businesses "adopt" specific schools in their area who are participants in the Partners in Education program. The FVS is grateful to the Adopt-a-Classroom Season Sponsors.

2007-2008 Partners In Education Program

PIE, Partners in Education is proud to present our 2007-2008 program, "An Instrumental Roundup: The FVS Goes West." PIE is a free outreach program that provides classroom teachers with the means and tools to connect their academic subjects with the themes and ideas in our exciting program. Students also develop a deeper appreciation for music and art.

In the fall, Symphony musicians travel to participating school and instruct students about the concert repertoire with a fun, interactive presentation that weaves music into the everyday classroom environment. Symphony quartet musicians visit classrooms again in spring to further students' knowledge of musical concepts. Appleton Art Center instructors will also visit, presenting an exciting visual art component that ties in directly with the music and concert themes.

The PIE art project will focus on the creation of landscapes, with a western flair! Students will learn the main components of landscape painting through the use of line, shape, texture, and color to form the fundamental horizon line. By referring to prominent artists throughout history, students will discover different techniques and styles that have been utilized in the past. We will combine the students' individual landscape creations into a collaborative large-scale work to be displayed at the education concert for all to see and enjoy.
Lori Schoenberger is employed at the Appleton Art Center as a gallery attendant and will be participating in the PIE program this year as an art instructor. She is a 2002 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout and has received a Bachelor of Fine Art, with a concentration in oil painting and pastels. Outside of the Art Center, Lori continues her passion for the arts by painting murals and other commissioned projects. Some of her recent work can be seen at the Hang Up Gallery in Neenah and at Apple Tree Connections in Appleton.

Marie Marschke holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design and has taught art classes for children from pre-Kindergarten through middle school. She has contributed to exhibitions in both the US and Canada and currently serves as Director of Membership and Community Relations for Appleton Art Center.
For the past several years the PIE program has also included a special clinician at the March concert. This year the clinician will be Sarah Wheeler. She will teach students about folk dances, and perform a ballet to "Hoedown" by Aaron Copland at the concert in March.
Sarah Wheeler, a recent graduate of Lawrence University, has been dancing since age five. Her background includes ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, pointe, and swing dancing. At Lawrence she was a member of the student-run Melee Dance Troupe and Lawrence Swing Dancers, and also participated in several student dance projects. "Hoedown" is her first experience as a professional choreographer. Sarah is a pianist, and is currently working as an accompanist at Lawrence University.
The program culminates on March 6th with the Partners in Education Concert "Instrumental Roundup" at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. Students attending will see artwork they created displayed, they will hear music they studied for months, and will experience all the excitement and energy that over 1500 attending students bring to our concert. They will also have the unique opportunity to watch a performance by an up and coming youth from our community, our Fox Valley Symphony Youth Soloist Competition winner. Concert attendance is only $5.00 per student.

Aaron Copland - Variations on a Shaker Tune
Sean O'Boyle - One Minute Concertos
Aaron Copland - Hoedown from Rodeo
YOUTH SOLOIST COMPETITION WINNER (TBA)

The concert repertoire will be both familiar and new to students. It is easily accessible by classroom teachers. O'Boyle's "One Minute Concertos" introduces children to individual instruments in the orchestra with, while Copland's Hoedown from Rodeo and Variations on a Shaker Tune will help children understand how folk music is an important part of American compositions. The exciting pieces programmed for this concert all have a southwest flavor.

Registration forms will be mailed to 3rd and 4th grade classroom teacher, elementary general music teachers and principals of previously participating schools. Watch for registration forms after Labor Day!
